Silence.

So this semester I'm taking a religion class called The Writings where we focus on the third part of the Tanak (Jewish canon) which includes books like Psalms, Proversbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, etc.
So, I'm enjoying doing my homework in this class because it often involves reading commentaries and Biblical texts.
However, the other day my homework included reading the first two chapters of Job. I'm enjoying wrestling with the truths of this book.. but one thing that just completely struck me. When Job's three friends came.. they sat in silence for a week! That's seven days, 168 hours, 10080 minutes of silence- no talking, no whispering, no playing charades... they just sat and commeserated with Job.
Silence scares me. Not in the same way that snakes or spiders do, but it is uncomfortable especially in the college world where there is always someone talking, watching tv or a movie or a radio playing.What would it be like if we only spoke when absolutely necessary, or didn't even speak at all? If we just listened to God and sat in fellowship with our friends...what would that look like? how would it change our responses to suffering? our response to joy?
